Aronia Vegan Cheesecake, Vegan Dessert -cooking with aronia

Aronia for Life is proud to present the newest superfood to Australians!

Aronia berries have become popular over the past few years since they have been dubbed a superfood. They are small berries, are dark purple/blue in colour and look similar to blueberries. Except, aronia berries are not technically part of the berry family, they are actually part of the rosaceae family, a type of fruit related to apples and pears.

Aronia berries have a unique tartness to them with earthy undertones, which gives them their not so appealing nickname, ‘chokeberries’ – which sounds worse than it is. The nickname Chokeberries has stuck because aronia berries have a puckery tartness to them which can leave your mouth feeling dry.

Aronia berries have high level of tannins (the natural compound inside them that gives them the mouth feeling that dry white wine does) it can be an acquired sensation, but it’s not harmful to you or your palette. Quite the opposite, in fact, aronia berries are one of highest naturally present antioxidant fruits in the world, hence holding the prestigious title of a superfood.

Because of their unique tartness, they can be a great addition to a lot of recipes and meals, especially if you want to try something new and exciting.

One easy and exciting cooking method to help incorporate aronia berries into your diet is by making your own jam from our Aronia Berry Juice. The juice is made with 100% organic cold pressed aronia berries with no added preservatives, so it’s perfect to simmer down into a jam.

The cooking process may help to ease the tartness of the berry which isn’t to everyone’s taste palette. It’s simple, easy and will leave you with a jam that’s as tasty as it is healthy. Making your own aronia berry jam opens doors to endless cooking and recipe ideas!

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups of Aronia Berry Juice
  • 6 Tbsp of classic powdered fruit pectin
  • 4 ½ cups of sugar

Equipment:

  • Canning jars, high quality mason jars
  • 2 large pots, 1 for cooking the jam, and a second for water canning, must be big enough to full submerge jars
  • A wire rack to insert jars into water canning

  Method:

  1. In a heavy pot cooking put, combine juice and pectin. Bring to a rolling boil, making sure you stir constantly (nice and easy). Stir in sugar. Return to a full roiling boil, making sure that you’re still stirring constantly. Boil hard for 1 minute, still stirring. Remove pot from heat. Quickly skim off foam with metal spoon.

Tip: you can test if your jam is setting by pressing a spoon into it, when you remove the spoon it will have a thin layer of jam like consistency stuck to it

  1. Ladle hot jam into the jars, leaving a ¼ inch of space between the lid and the jam
  2. Place the jars into the boiling-water canner, this will help to seal and keep the jam preserved longer. Start timer for 5 minutes when the water is boiling. Remove jars from canner and let cool.

Aronia jam will be well preserved so you can keep it in the fridge for as long as you need. Aronia berry jam can be spread on toast or muffins, be added to cheesecakes and desserts and many more! The unique and earthy flavours of this super berry will help add a new dimension to desserts and get you and your family trying something new.
